SMU Youth Expedition Program Teams set up goat raising project for Share A Child beneficiaries
The Share A Child recently partnered with the Singapore Management University for a goat-raising project to help families of child laborers in two Cebu City upland barangays increase their income. The objective of the activity is to decrease the incidence of child labor in Barangays Guba and Adlaon by providing families with alternative livelihood. Two teams from the Singapore Management University, composed of 16 and 18 students, cooperated in the activity, helping to raise funds, go on home stays, build goat pens and assist in the community survey. The first team led by Joel Ng and co-leader Shermaine Lee arrived on May 4 and stayed until May 21 at the Barangay Adlaon where they were housed at the barangay hall. The second team headed by Shien Wu and co-leader Kaijin arrived on May 29 and stayed in Barangay Guba until June 16. The two teams were joined by SUPACA members who acted as their translators. |

Share A Child Step UP now enrolling new learners
The Step UP Project of the Share A Child was initiated through a partnership with the Visayan Forum and Microsoft. The program is intended to provide new skills to vulnerable groups of young people to give them better access to decent employment and thus arm them against human traffickers. The Step UP Project is operated at the Share A Child SUPACA Rhub Center in Barangay Kinasang-an and is open to young people, aged 16-25 years of age who are not enrolled in school. Child domestic laborers are given special focus by the project because they are a sector considered by the Philippine Government as engaged in one of the most hazardous types of work.
The course takes one month and covers two aspects: computer literacy and skills for life. Computer literacy has 8 modules, namely: computer fundamentals, digital media, internet and world wide web, web design, word processing, presentation, database and spreadsheet. On the other hand, the skills for life will go through 6 units, namely: self awareness, interpersonal relationships and communication, coping with emotions and stress in positive ways, critical thinking and decision-making, problem solving and conflict resolution and goal setting.
The Share A Child has graduated a total of seven batches already, with each batch consisting of 25 learners. Classes for the new batch will start on June 30 in the afternoons from 1:00 until 5:00. |
